Our school is a place of faith and learning
Dear Parents and Families,
Last weekend, we had a group of students attend Commitment Masses in preparation to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation is one of seven sacraments within the Catholic Church.
It is one of three sacraments of Initiation. Children after having receiving the holy Spirit at Baptism are sealed with the Spirit once more and are called to go and live the message of Christ, i.e. to love God and to love others.
We pray for Dakota, Jude ad Aisah, as they prepare to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.
NAPLAN
Students in Year 3 and Year 5 will begin NAPLAN testing next week. This is one is one assessment of many that children complete throughout the school year. Please know that you are welcome to discuss your child’s learning at any time by arranging a meeting time with your child’s classroom teacher.
THE RESILIENCE PROJECT
Please know that students will be participating in a presentation with the Resilience Project Team on Tuesday May 24th, 2022. They will travel to the Wedge and together with other local schools participating in The Project, they will take part in a learning session to further explore topics associated with their wellbeing.
There will also be a session for Parents and again for teachers, later that day and in the evening. Please see the attached flyer for more details.
READING WEBINAR
The junior school staff, Years Foundation through to Year 2 have prepared a Reading Webinar which will be available to parents later this month. The webinar will explain the latest research into the science and teaching of Reading and the nature of the Reading program within the school, based on the current research evidence.
The webinar will allow all parents to access this information at a time suitable to them as well as giving you the opportunity to watch it over again if necessary.
Again, teachers are available to discuss the teaching of Reading and your child’s efforts within this space at a time that works for you both. We believe the webinar may answer a number of questions you may have, particularly with respect to the nature of reading at home.
It is important to note that teaching and learning is continually evolving and evaluated. We are committed to using the latest research that supports your child’s learning.
INSIGHT SRC SURVEY
Once again there will be an opportunity for some families to participate in this annual survey that intends to gain an insight into your evaluation of various aspects of the school in matters such as Teaching and Learning, Child safety and Catholic Identity.
Sixty families will have the opportunity to participate. Some may have taken part in previous years and we try and rotate those involved, each year. Surveys will go out next week and can be completed online or by completing a hard copy and returning it to the school.
SCHOOL REVIEW
As mentioned previously, the school will be undertaking a major review this year, including a review by the Victorian Qualifications and Registration Authority. Both processes involve looking at the school’s current policies and practices. The Insight SRC Survey, will gather one slice of data that can be used to gauge the current organisational, teaching, student and parent climate.
COVID SAFETY
Just a reminder, that if children are unwell they are asked to remain at home until there symptoms are resolved.
Children presenting unwell at school will be sent home.
RAT testing surveillance is recommended throughout the first four weeks of second term.
If your child is a close contact, they may attend school, however, RAT testing is requested for five out of the seven days of what would normally have been an isolating period.
Children over eight years and adults are also asked to wear a mask when attending the school as close contacts.
We ask anyone who is unwell not to visit the school until their symptoms are resolved.
Families are still required to notify the school if children test positive or are designated as close contacts.
OPEN DAYS & ENROLMENTS
Please know that Open Days will take place on Wednesday May 25th until Friday, May 27th between 9am and 11am for all families.
Enrolment Interviews will take place for new families in the following week. Sibling families will be able to have enrolment interviews a little later into the term.
We ask sibling families to notify the school if their child is to begin Foundation in 2023. It is most important that we are aware of numbers for this will determine the number of places available for new families.
MOTHER’S DAY
We wish all our Mother’s a very happy Mother’s Day this Sunday and thank them for all they do to support their child/children each day.

Search for children at St Thomas' who follow in Fred Hollows’ footsteps
The Fred Hollows Foundation is calling for nominations for the annual Fred Hollows Humanity Award, which recognises Year 6 students who demonstrate compassion, integrity and kindness towards others.
Parents, teachers, principals and members of communities around the country can nominate a child who is making a difference at www.hollows.org/fredhollowshumanityaward before Friday 22 July.
Since 2012, the Fred Hollows Humanity Award has recognised more than 2000 students nationwide, who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Whether it is helping someone in need, volunteering or fundraising for a good cause, children at St Thomas' are making a tremendous contribution to our community and the Fred Hollows Humanity Award is a great opportunity for them to be recognised.
Previous year’s nominees included a boy from the ACT who taught himself Auslan to communicate with a profoundly deaf classmate, a girl from Victoria who raised awareness and funds for refugees and a boy from Tasmania who provided ongoing support to a classmate with a serious medical condition.
All nominees will receive a certificate and be recognised at a presentation ceremony later in the year.
Each state and territory will also recognise a Junior Ambassador who will be able to extend their humanity by allocating $5,000, donated by the award’s charity partner Specsavers, to one of The Foundation’s programs to end avoidable blindness.
“Fred used to say the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other,” said Gabi Hollows, Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation.
“He would be so proud to know The Fred Hollows Humanity Award is recognising students who are demonstrating this belief in their own lives".
“I am constantly inspired by the actions of award recipients and I urge people to nominate a Year 6 student in their area who embodies the values of compassion, integrity and kindness.”
Nominations are now open and close 11.59pm, Friday 22 July. To see examples of past Junior Ambassadors and to nominate a Year 6 student, go to: www.hollows.org/fredhollowshumanityaward
