SchoolTV Launch
St Thomas’ Sale is now offering a valuable resource called SchoolTV to parents.
Parenting our children is a complex, challenging and rewarding experience. However, the demands on parents to remain current with technology, drug and alcohol advice and safe practices in a virtual and social media world, as well as dealing with anxiety and wellbeing, add to our busy and diverse family lives.
SchoolTV is a new ongoing resource that is now available to all St Thomas’ parents. Each online edition will address a major topic with expert interviews, fact sheets, a parent quiz, recommended apps, books and more. SchoolTV combines information from a host of reliable resources, including BeyondBlue and ReachOut. It provides a single stream of independent factual information that saves parents time and the confusion of searching across multiple online sites for information. Whenever you complete a quiz or an online survey on School TV, all answers are anonymous.
You can access the SchoolTV archive here https://sttsale.catholic.schooltv.me/
You can also access School TV via PAM Parent Links or our School Website.
During the School year we will publish various topics for you to access.
The topics covered may be pertinent to your immediate situation, or the resource may be useful for you at a later date.
We hope that you find SchoolTV to be informative and a useful source of current well-researched information.
A SPECIAL REPORT: The Wellbeing Barometer
SchoolTV has been supporting families and schools for quite some time now by providing guidance and information to help alleviate some of the challenges faced by young people, especially during the pandemic. Over recent months, many people have been impacted and it has proven to be a difficult time for some more than others.
However, irrespective of whether your family has experienced many lockdowns or not, the social, economic and psychological impacts over the coming months remain uncertain. There is substantial evidence to show that mental health concerns are on the rise, especially in relation to our young people who may require some extra support. Parents will need to play a vital role in providing this support, helping their kids reframe their worries and focus more on the things they can control in their life. Ensuring the mental health and wellbeing of our young people is important for many reasons, one of which is the direct impact it can have on educational outcomes.
In this Special Report, we are seeking parent participation through a short survey. The survey is designed to assist the school to provide a barometer on the state of wellbeing within the community. The information gathered will assist in focussing on the key issues affecting students and discovering where further assistance may be required. Responses will remain anonymous and are applicable to all school-aged children across primary and secondary levels.
We encourage all parents and carers to spend a few moments to complete the survey. This will help with understanding the nature and extent of your concerns and determine how best to support our community.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Winter Sport
Students in Grade 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to represent St Thomas’ at the SSV Winter Sport competition on Wednesday 8th Jun in either Netball, AFL or Soccer. Each team will play a round robin competition and finals against teams from schools in our local district. Students have nominated the sport they will like to be considered for, and where required, will participate in try-outs over the coming weeks. In order to allow all of our students to participate, we will require parent assistance for each of the events. If you are interested in coaching, umpiring or scoring any of the above sports and have completed the school induction program, we would love to hear from you. Please email Mrs Duffield at gduffield@sttsale.catholic.edu.au

Search for children at St Thomas' who follow in Fred Hollows’ footsteps
The Fred Hollows Foundation is calling for nominations for the annual Fred Hollows Humanity Award, which recognises Year 6 students who demonstrate compassion, integrity and kindness towards others.
Parents, teachers, principals and members of communities around the country can nominate a child who is making a difference at www.hollows.org/fredhollowshumanityaward before Friday 22 July.
Since 2012, the Fred Hollows Humanity Award has recognised more than 2000 students nationwide, who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Whether it is helping someone in need, volunteering or fundraising for a good cause, children at St Thomas' are making a tremendous contribution to our community and the Fred Hollows Humanity Award is a great opportunity for them to be recognised.
Previous year’s nominees included a boy from the ACT who taught himself Auslan to communicate with a profoundly deaf classmate, a girl from Victoria who raised awareness and funds for refugees and a boy from Tasmania who provided ongoing support to a classmate with a serious medical condition.
All nominees will receive a certificate and be recognised at a presentation ceremony later in the year.
Each state and territory will also recognise a Junior Ambassador who will be able to extend their humanity by allocating $5,000, donated by the award’s charity partner Specsavers, to one of The Foundation’s programs to end avoidable blindness.
“Fred used to say the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other,” said Gabi Hollows, Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation.
“He would be so proud to know The Fred Hollows Humanity Award is recognising students who are demonstrating this belief in their own lives".
“I am constantly inspired by the actions of award recipients and I urge people to nominate a Year 6 student in their area who embodies the values of compassion, integrity and kindness.”
Nominations are now open and close 11.59pm, Friday 22 July. To see examples of past Junior Ambassadors and to nominate a Year 6 student, go to: www.hollows.org/fredhollowshumanityaward
